A genuine ruby is one that is actually dug up from a ruby mine, heat
treated to clear impurities and enhance color and then cut into
required shapes and sizes. To an untrained eye, a manmade ruby would
appear extremely gorgeous as it would be flawless and vibrant color.
Most of us would expect a genuine gemstone in our ruby ring and should
therefore get what we paid for. Unfortunately, it is not always easy to
differentiate a genuine ruby from a cleverly made manmade ruby.
It is
therefore necessary that you choose a jeweller that you can trust. The
source (origin) of the gemstone in your ruby ring is equally important
as, that would determine the beauty of the gemstone. Rubies are found
in a few African countries and in Thailand and Burma. However the best
rubies are mined in Burma and good quality Burmese rubies carry a stiff
price tag. It would be a good idea to let the seller clearly specify
the source of the gemstone in your ruby ring and clearly mention
whether it is a genuine or manmade gemstone. Your budget range will
also limit the size of the gemstone that you can afford for your ruby
gold ring.
Gemstones are generally sold by weight (carats) and large
size rubies are much more expensive (per carat) as compared to smaller
sizes. Ruby rings with large sized rubies will either be very high
priced or have rubies of low quality and appear awful. In general, go
for a ring with a modestly sized ruby gem so that the quality is fairly
good. There is one other option that you might want to consider where,
many small pieces of good quality rubies are closely set in a design.
For example, a large rectangle can be created in a ruby ring and this
area can be covered with small square ruby gems that are very closely
set. It requires very skilled craftsmen to do such intricate work as
there will be no gold portion visible between the small gems. Very
specific custom cutting of the gemstone will also be required for such
setting to be done.
